Athletes have a unique form of influence. Their accomplishments create visibility, their stories build connection, and their platforms can bring attention to challenges facing our communities. Influence becomes especially meaningful when it is used to create access to opportunities that can shape someone’s future.
One initiative I led earlier in my career brought together the Chris Paul Family Foundation and Kaiser Permanente to support students and families at two elementary schools in Compton, California. The project centered on refurbishing computer labs and establishing mental health and resilience resources for students and their families.
For me, the work represented an important intersection of partnership strategy, community investment, and the potential of sports to create impact beyond the game.
START WITH THE NEED
Effective community partnerships begin with understanding what a community needs and how the participating organizations can contribute.
In this case, the computer lab renovations were designed to help address gaps in access to technology and educational resources for students in an under-resourced community.
The accompanying well-being resources recognized that supporting young people means considering more than their academic environment alone. Together, these elements connected educational access with a broader commitment to student and family well-being.
ALIGNING INFLUENCE WITH PURPOSE
Chris Paul’s vision and passion to invest in the next generation through access to STEM education brought a meaningful connection and purpose to the initiative.
Chris is a representation of how professional athletes can use their influence and visibility to align with other brand’s that have similar priorities and use those resources to build programs that create a greater lasting impact across communities and potentially the economic future of families for generations to come.
That first requires having a strong mission, then thoughtful planning and aligning with partners before the vision can become a reality. For this initiation, I led the stages, from initial brand alignment and concept development to implementation, down to hanging themed decor in the freshly painted computer labs and coordinating the on-site ribbon-cutting events.
THINKING BEYOND THE ACTIVATION
The ribbon cutting event was a visible milestone, marking the completion of the computer labs and recognizing the importance of the collaborations that made it possible, but the greater purpose was the lasting impact of the renewed resources that were provided for the students and families to use them.
MY TAKEAWAY
To me this initiative reinforces the power of strategic partnerships, the impact athletes can have when they use their influence to address a community need, and that when those connections align and are supported with resources, the results are remarkable.
Chris Paul and the Chris Paul Family Foundation are an inspiring representation of how professional athletes can help bring visibility and resources to create spaces where communities can thrive.
