From Partnership Strategy to a Moment the Market Had Never Seen

Some partnerships create value through consistency, others create the opportunity to rethink what’s possible. Wings Over Houston became an example of the latter.

When I took on evaluating the partnership with United Airlines, the opportunity was to build a more integrated presence at this nationally recognized aviation event and connect it to our broader brand priorities including our community engagement, aviation career pathways, and youth STEM and aviation career education.

The goal wasn’t simply to show up at a major Houston event with static advertisements. It was to create a partnership that made sense for our brand, our business, and the community we serve.

START WITH THE STRATEGIC OPPORTUNITY

The planning began well before the event itself. From evaluating the partnership and negotiating contract terms to aligning internal stakeholders and developing activation plans, the work required connecting multiple objectives into one cohesive approach.

We pursued an expanded role for United, including official commercial airline partner designation, an aircraft display, hospitality for key stakeholders, and programming designed to engage young people and community partners.

Each element had a purpose. Brand visibility and key messages strengthened our presence at the event and showcased our investments in the community. Hospitality created opportunities for relationship-building. Youth programming connected our industry to the next generation of aviation talent.

The value came from how these pieces worked together.

BUILDING SOMETHING DIFFERENT

United’s presence included a Boeing 737 static display, hands-on youth STEM and aviation career programming, career insights with talent representatives, family-focused photo opportunities, and an unparalleled, Boeing 777 aerial demonstration. The demonstration was particularly significant, as United became the first commercial airline to perform an aircraft demonstration in the airshow’s more than 40-year history.

That distinction created a compelling story, but it was the result of months of coordination across teams, partners, operational stakeholders, and an incredible specialized team of flight test pilots. A visible moment of this scale depends on a substantial amount of work that the audience never sees and many people don’t consider.

Strategy establishes the direction. Collaboration makes execution possible.

CONNECTING THE BRAND TO THE COMMUNITY

The partnership also created opportunities to inspire students, engage employees, community and business partners and connect with local audiences.

More than 70 high school students, alongside aviation students from Texas Southern University, participated in STEM and aviation career-focused programming. More than 125 United employees volunteered, and over 150 guests were hosted in our hospitality space.

The event also generated local media coverage and opportunities for United representatives to share perspectives on aviation, innovation and the company’s role in Houston.

These elements mattered because they connected our presence to something broader than the airshow itself. The strongest brand platforms create multiple reasons for people to engage, each connected to a larger strategic purpose.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

A partnership of this scale should be evaluated across several factors including brand differentiation, audience connection, community outcomes and the opportunities it creates for future engagement.

The historic demonstration was a defining moment. The broader value was the integrated platform surrounding it. The experience reinforced my belief that strategic partnerships are most effective when partnertship benefits are designed with intention, clear priories and resources to support a connected experience.

MY TAKEAWAY

A partnership becomes more valuable when its individual elements work together to tell a bigger story.

The objective isn’t to maximize the number of activations. It’s to create a platform where brand, business, and community priorities reinforce one another.
